Sarvesh Kushare Scripts History with Podium Finish on Diamond League Debut in Monaco
Sarvesh Kushare created history by finishing third in the men's high jump at the Monaco Diamond League 2026 on his debut. The Indian athlete cleared 2.26m to become the first Indian to secure a top-three finish on a Diamond League debut and only the fourth Indian ever to reach the podium, continuing a breakthrough season ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Kushare produced an outstanding and consistent display throughout the competition. He successfully cleared 2.12m, 2.16m, 2.20m, 2.23m and 2.26m, each on his first attempt. He was unable to clear 2.28m despite making three attempts, which ultimately left him in third place.
Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk claimed victory with a jump of 2.32m, while Great Britain's Jack Kimani secured second place with a clearance of 2.30m in his own Diamond League debut.
The Indian high jumper's achievement gained further significance as he finished ahead of several elite competitors, including joint Tokyo Olympics gold medallists Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar, who finished seventh and eighth respectively.
The podium finish continues what has already been a breakthrough year for Kushare. Last month, he set a new national record of 2.31m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, surpassing Tejaswin Shankar's eight-year-old national record.
Kushare had also become the first Indian high jumper to qualify for the final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year, marking another milestone in his career.
The impressive Diamond League debut comes ahead of another major challenge, as Kushare has been named in India's 32-member athletics squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. His historic podium finish in Monaco has further strengthened his credentials and provided a significant confidence boost as he prepares to compete on another major international stage.
